FAQ

How do I search for gems in your blog?

- Unfortunately the search box doesn’t find gems by tags so the best way is to add “/tagged/[the gem your searching for]” after sarahmagdalena.tumblr.com. Ex. http://sarahmagdalena.tumblr.com/tagged/fluorites

Are you geologist?

- No I’m a gemologist which is quite different but in my two year bachelor in Gemstone Engineering and jewellery making, geology and mineralogy was a big part of my studies.

Where did you study?

- My bachelor is from Luleå University of Technology in Sweden but I am certified through the Gemological Association of Great Britian

What is gemology?

- Straight from the dictonary: The study of gem materials from their origins to their use in jewellery based on sciences, arts and commerce.

Basically everything you need to know about gemstones :)

How did you become a gemologist?

-Living in Sweden, gemology isn’t a subject you find in every school. So I came across a new university program called Gemstone Engineering and jewellery making which was perfect for me since I tended to work within jewellery. So I applied and the campus where I was studying (Lannavaara, Kiruna) was also an allied teaching center for the Gemological Association of Great Britain so I also took the international certificate for colored gemstones while studying at the uni.

What is your favorite gem?

- This is hard one! Of course I can’t pick just one :P But the Amethyst is my birthstone and I’ve been infatuated with it’s since the age of 6. Other then that the Tourmaline, Fluorite and Moonstone. I know I should say Diamonds and Emeralds but they dont do it for me haha. I love gems that can appear in many colors and shapes and as seen in my blog Fluorites never stops surprising me with new colors and appearances.

Are you working as a gemologist?

- At the moment I am teaching a class called “introduction to gemstones” at ARY Academy in Dubai. Im building up new programs at the academy as we go and at the same time I’m studying jewellery design & I’m facet-cutting gems so you can say that gemology is keeping me busy full time :)

Where do I go if I wanna study gemology?

- There are alot of institutes and they have associations in many countries. Here are the bigger ones:

There are alot more and look around in your city to see what kind of educations you can find. There are alot of development in smaller gem educations for people who might just wanna test and see what gemology is all about.
